Confused about timing on 89 Formula 350
I went outside to check the timing ,so I marked the line on the balancer with white paint ,but on the tab I cant read teh degree numbers because of surface rust. I don tknow if each notch is 1 or 2 degrees. S oanyway I put the timing gun on and turned it on and the line onthe balancer is PAST the whole freaken degree tab. Whats this mean?

Means you did not disconnect the EST line...on the '89 it should be located behind the pass. side strut tower, a single wire connector...tan/blk...disconnect it, then look at the timing.
If I recall...the mark way to the right is 2 degrees ATDC, then 2 degree incremonets going to the left on each "point"..so all the way to the left is 10? or 12?*'s BTDC.

Mike,
You have to disconnect the EST lead in order to read the base timing of the car. The EST lead is located on the firewall around the Air Conditioner core and the fan unit. It is a single brown lead with a connector on it. Once you disconnect this lead (at the connector) you will read the timing (Base)without the computer adding timing. The biggest "V" (Center of the V) on the timing tab is 0* The next "V" above 0* (Center of the V) is 6* BTDC. Remember that the portion of the tab with the most scales is BTDC.

Ok guys I disconnected the wire and at idle the mark is that the tip of the first point left of the 0 mark. So that would be 4 right? If I was to move it up to 8 I would have to set it at the 2nd point?

why dont you just get a small peice of sandpaper and clean off the surface rust by hand? I did this, and then sprayed a little bit of aluminum color engine paint on it, easy to read now and took a grand total of 5 mins to do

I can reach mine with a long extension. You may have to loosen your coil and push it to the side.

And yes, it's a pain to get to at first sight, just move the coil or loosed the coil to gain better access to the bolt. it's really not THAT bad.

Sears Hardware sells several distributor bolt wrenches which have about a 4 inch off set.
I bought one and it works OK, still very tight in there but I can loosen and tighten the distributor bolt.
To get more room if you have the external coil like my '87, you can remove the 2 bolts that hold down the coil and move it and that plastic vacuum thingee out of the way.
And I agree with Hank, the second peak is 8* advance if to the left as you stated.
