carb to TPI

Hey smok'in I did the LG4 to LB9 swap ('84 carb'd to '91 TPI) and just completed it recently. It took me and my dad over a year of tinkering with it 3-4 times a week for an hour or two at a time. I recieved a lot of advice from TPI specialties in San Antonio TX. My system actually sat in my shed since 1991, but I did not start the swap until March 1999. We took our time and went over ALL of the wiring. We wanted to be sure that everything would be perfect the first time around.
I wanted to do the swap just to learn about electronic fuel injection, and that I did, and I also wanted the look of the TPI. As far as performance, dollar for dollar, it is not a wise investment, compared to hot-rodding a carb'd engine, although the drivability is excellent and the basically stock engine has tons of torque.
You really need the factory service manuals and a very good understanding of wiring diagrams to be sucessful. It is not hard but it is painstaking and will take a lot more time than the carb.
I did not have the service of this forum when I did my swap but highly recomend consulting the people who subscribe to this site.

LOW performance people should drive low performance vehicles!

Did you change anything else on the LG4 when you did the swap ie cam/headers etc? I have all the parts to do the same on my '85 Z28 and am wondering how much of a gain I can expect just by going to TPI with an otherwise stock LG4.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Perth, the only gains you'll see is maybe 10 HP, but you'll gain noticeable torque! One thing you should seriously consider is a cam change however because the cam in the LG4 is so unbelievably SMALL! With the TPI and a cam change, you can have at least 25% more power outpput from your 305.

I converted my 86 Camaro from carb to TPI. Of course you need the TPI crap and complete engine wiring harness but you will have to make changes to the inside of the car because GM is cheaper then we thought.
Here is my drawing of what I had to do to my 86 for it to match the factory wiring of a stock TPI. It works!

I'm doing the same thing....
I have an 87 IROC with the LG-4, and recently bought an 85 IROC with the LB9 305. I pulled the heads (debating wether to rebuild or buy new high performance ones), and will be DEFINATLY swapping in a better cam. I've pulled everything out of the donor car, but I'm wating untill I buy everything I'm going to be doing to my car (ceramic coated headers, new chip, cam, possibly runners and base, injectors cleaned and blue printed, AFPR, custom cold air intake, air foil) before I even attempt the swap, so I can do EVERYTHING in one shot. I just have a couple questions myself...
Can I use the stock chip for now? It's an 85 with an auto and I have an 87 with a 5-spd...
Is it worth getting new runners and base? If so which one's are the BEST money can buy? My car isn't stock (read sig), and I don't want to have to pull the TPI apart at a later point to put the runners and base on when I can do it now...

Doing the same swap as statted in other posts. I have an '86 donor car with auto, mine is stick, 305 to 350. How much do I have to change as far as computer/wiring is conserned, I know what to do about the manifold and stuff, only questions are related to keeping all the auxilliary stuff working too.

I have done this swap and it is not difficult at all..... I had Help with FIS, they did my harness and a lot of other stuff... MY car was a cross-fire car, but now a strong Tune PORT.... to the tune of high 12's. Iam selling my complete system for 700.00. I mean it includes everthing for you to install and turn the key... I will be willing to help you also.... I know the system. Its very easy once you tinker with it for awhile....... the harness and computer will even run your ALDL connector also,so you can troulbleshoot........ Reason iam selling, iam going to turn the car into a drag-race only car........
