Jerking at High Speeds....what can cause this??
Hey all.
I have a question, I just installed a 90-92 Speed density set-up on my 82 and I'm getting a jerky/ sluggish sensation at high speeds at normal acceleration - almost no pressure on the throttle. It's something coming from the engine area...if I accelerate it goes away until I let off the gas again. It does have a slight miss that I can't seem to figure out.
Here are some specs
1. 1990 - 1992 5.7 Speed Density set-up
2. Rebuilt computer and custom Chip, set to stock 1990 Camaro specs but deleted Vats and smog.
3. New TPI in- tank pump, filter, and remanufactured stock 22lb injectors.
4. All new gaskets and engine sensors, map, oxygen, TPS, etc...no old sensor was re-used.
5. Custom labeled TPI harness
6. New distributor, wires, cap, plugs and rotor. Timed 6 degrees BTDC
This miss and sluggish hesitation / jerking started after I swapped to TPI. I didn't have this problem with a carburator....that's why I think it has something to do with the new set-up. Maybe starving for air or gas??
Another possibilty is maybe my TV cable is misadjusted or the pressure solenoids in the tranny to operate lock-up are N.O. instead of normally closed ...I did change those. I'm not sure how they would act if reversed.
Please help, has anyone else experienced this with thier stock set-up? Open to any ideas!
Thanks again

I kinda had the same problem, but mine had problems at idle also. my car is stock though, my coputer went bad. If you take the computer out but leave the wire connected, start the engine. While it is running tap on it and if idle changes or dies it means your computer is bad.

Hey thanks for the reply
I think I might have fixed my jerking problem, won't know for sure until I get my car back together. It may have been my TCC lock-up configuration.
But here is what I found out.......
On 700r4 transmissions from 82 - 88ish the lock-up system consisted of a 4th gear pressure switch and a 3-4 gear pressure switch wired in series with the solenoid. My car was originally a 82 crossfire and that is what the current configuration was in my car when I first installed my TPI stuff.
On 1990-1992 TPI speed density the configuration is a 4th gear pressure switch and the solenoid. The 3-4 switch is eliminated and the chores are handled by the computer.
I think my old set-up was causing my car to go in and out of lock-up and do all kinds of crazy things at the 40 mph cruising speed....including the jerking.
I've since snagged the correct harness, solenoid and switch for the 90-92 configuration.
