Airfoil and other TPI questions
Airfoil and other TPI questions
1. Is an Airfoil a good purchase and does it really help?
2. I have an 87 formula 350. Can I remove the baffle box and if I do what effect does it have?

Hehe, baffle box is a good name for it. It's Pontiac's dumb@ss idea for an intake. *Very* restrictive. I don't see how you could just remove it (you can't cut slots in the side like newer models), but you can replace it. I'm personally gonna get the SLP cold air box by itself, then find the tubing from an 88,89 car (that's what SLP uses) so I can save some money. Hopefully, they'll sell me the canister relocation stuff separately, we'll see. HTH.

An airfoil is worth 12-20 cfm depending on the throttle body. So if your engine can use the additional airflow, then you can make additional HP.
The air box you are referrring to can certainly use some upgrades. I would at least look at an K&N filter, and perhaps a K&N cone filter and throw out the whole air box.
I made my own coil air kit with some sheet aluminum. Basically isolated the engine bay heat from the air box so it would draw air from the fender. Cheap and it worked.
MArk.

The only bad thing about throwing out the whole intake system is that there is a sensor attached and I don't really want to ride around with the check engine light on.
Can't I take the air box(not the filter box) out and hook the two hoses together?

You can remove the baffle box and hook the mass air flow sensor directly to the throttle body but it will not solve the problem. The problem with the restrictive air cleaner setup on your car is the factory air cleaner body. The 1985 thru 1987 cars had a different air cleaner body then the 1988 and newer cars. If you go to a salavage yard and get the 1988 and newer air cleaner setups you will see a nice increase in air flow. According to SLP the 1988 and newer air cleaner setups are 15% less restrictive then the 1985-1987 setups.
