TPI Intake Question?
TPI Intake Question?
On My 87 Trans AM 350 TPI with 5-spd and posi rear. Is it worth porting the stock intake? Or getting a Edelbrock Intake for the TPI? I only have about $400.00 to spend at this time and want to get the one that will yeild the best performance. If I go with the Edelbrock I would not beable to have it ported and probley would not pull it back off to have ported. So which would be the better choice for me. BTW I will have the stock plumuen ported with either intake. I have ported cast iron stock L98 heads, 24# SVO injectors, 52mm Edelbrock TB, SLP runners, Compcam with 1.6 rockers lift I:480 E:510 duration at .050 I:206 E:210, 3.73 gears and soon to have hooker headers, AFPR and a custom chip.
id port the mess out of the stocker for right now. massage and blend the runners into the head ports, but be careful to not get overzealous, the walls have thin areas. portmatch and blend the plenum to runners area, there is about 20-30hrs of work on the manifold and plenum. and even if you get the manifold, youll still have to hog them out too.. true the gain probably wont be felt behind the wheel, but your time slips will be prouder. if that is what your wanting...

Ok, just my .02, but here it is.
Most of this is what I've read so take it for what it is worth.
1) Most everyone says that porting it yourself is not as good as the Edelbrock intake. You just can't get the passages ported that good but you should be able to get around 200rpm more at top end.
The Edelbrock intake I've heard people getting 500rpm more at top end. go figure.
2)10 hp gain is on an unmodified car. With a modified car, like yours, you could possiblely get 20-25hp. Is it worth it? BTW did you port match the SLP runners and gaskets to the plenum? Also I heard that grinding down the inner wall of the runners helps.
3) If your going to get an Edelbrock intake read this thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/messageforu...ML/000195.html
It may help you.
Either way you go I think you'll see some great gains at the track.
Good Luck!
