Speedo/VSS Problems
So a few days ago I fired up my car and left my school's parking lot when I smelt a horrible buring plastic type smell and all of a sudden my speedo stopped working.
Just yesterday I had the car jacked up to change the sparkplugs and I checked the VSS to see if it got damaged somehow and it looked ok and I also checked the wiring and fuses and everything looked ok.
How do I tell for sure that the VSS burnt out out on me? The part shop said it would be $120 and I'm not dropping that kind of money if its not broken.
I was also thinking that maybe something shorted in the gauge cluster itself but all the other gauges work just fine.
The car in question is a 1992 Z28 with a T5

Re: Speedo/VSS Problems
Its a 10mm bolt holding the speedo gears in. Remove that, pull the speedo unit out, and look at the gears. One is on the speedo unit, the other is on the tailshaft inside. Use a flashlight to see it.

I didn't check the gear in the tailshaft. If it is that would a replacement be hard to come by?

Also check the VSS buffer box, its located under the passenger side dash, little yellow plastic box. it could have shorted and burned.

Re: Speedo/VSS Problems
There is no yellow buffer box on 90-92 TPI cars. That's only on 86-89 MAF TPI Firebirds, and 88-92 TBI cars.
