Fuel pump/oil switch

The fuel pump switch that is shown here next to the fuel pump relay, is that the one on the back of the motor where the oil sensor is?

According to ChevyThunder.com it "is used for the protection of the motor if the oil pressure falls below 5 psi." How? Looking at the diagram above it looks like it is just a switch in parallel with the relay. Looking at the pinouts on ChevyThunder (7165 ecm) I don't see an oil pressure pin...

Also, pin B2, fuel pump signal, does that just go to the power line to the fuel pump and tell the ecm that the pump is on?

It's an '86 (i think) 305 going in a '64 Scout.

Re: Fuel pump/oil switch

usually it was the one right above the oil filter

normally

but not always

what vehicle is that engine sitting in ? i see a GM hydroboost braking system so its most likely a truck of some sorts - or is that the 64 scout ?

i had a 77 Scout II once

right hand drive

it was a rusted beater but it ran and drove good i shoulda kept it hmmm

304 and auto trans

have you run the stamping suffix code on the front deck pass side behind the alternator ? last three digits normally always three capitalized letters such as CBA for example

it will tell you year make model size HP and so on

good luck

Re: Fuel pump/oil switch

The information on chevythunder.com is incorrect. It's one of those things that a lot of people misunderstand. It's function is to serve as a backup power supply in case the main relay system fails. It will provide a power source after a certain pressure is reached.
You are correct about the B2 pin. It's for voltage sensing. It can't tell if the pump is on, just that the circuit has voltage.

This link has better diagrams. They are color copies of the factory service manual for the 86 wiring. It covers all wiring for all Camaros in 86 so it's more than you need, but it's helpful. http://92b4crs.tripod.com/86wiring/dia-pics/22-2.jpg shows the fuel pump circuit.
I'd see if I could find a service manual since it has trouble shooting as well. Problem with the older ones is the electrical diagrams and trouble shooting was a separate manual. My 87 is like that, and they seem to be harder to find online.

Re: Fuel pump/oil switch

Thanks guys. Yes that is the '64 Scout, I converted to hydroboost and power steering, swapped out the wimpy Dana 27 axles for stronger D44s, wheeled it once and tore it down for the TPI motor, 700r4, and one ton axles.

My other Scout is a 73 with 304 converted to TBI. Runs much better than the carb ever did.

Jay- that's what I thought about that. Now I'm thinking I could use it with a few relays as an engine kill. Should I lay this sucker on it's side, pressure drops and engine shuts down.

Code is V0109DDS, I'm looking and it was built in Flint, MI on Jan 9 and is a 4 bbl motor in an '83 Firebird? Doesn't sound right. ECM has a junkyard sticker on it, valve covers are not the centerbolt style, which I understand didn't start until '87 with the roller motors.(?)

Looking for my engine book, but until then I can google. Casting numbers are 14088551, 86-87 305.
