why does my car die?

ok i have an 89 Iroc 350 w/ T5, dont start with me, its swapped in. ok well i was going up the interstate yesterday going to a friend house and when i shifted from 4th to 5th the car just died. it did it again getting off the interstate when i pushed the clutch in and again several miles up the road. i started playing with it to see if i could make it do it. well id get up and let it run at about 3500-4000 rpms and then just push in the clutch and watch my rpms drop. i noticed it goes lower than usual like its having a problem staying above 500rpms when i push in the clutch. it fights it every once in a while and stays cranked though. any suggestions?
