what does it take for 400rwhp w/l98 + tpi?

the only gripe i have had with tpi fbody's is that they have not been able to make good power like the ls1's - what would it take for an l98/tpi motor to make around 400rwhp n/a through an auto?

N/A? That will be a serious combo. You'll need a stroker crank, AFR heads, Miniram intake, and a big cam.

If you wan that much power, it woudl be easier to build a mild combo and hit it with a shot of squeeze.

I don't see it happening . Well not unless you have the squezze. There are like two or 3 guys here with hi-po TPI setups .... They may have 400 crank.... but not 4000 wheel hp . I think it would take alot of learning or something lol. You could bolt on a turbo though

We'll see. I should have 403 rwhp. I'm busy tuning my new setup so i'm not quite there yet.

With a LTR TPI intake?

A miracle.

Re: what does it take for 400rwhp w/l98 + tpi?

yeah that would be insane. possible a big 400+ cubic inch motor with a nice cam and fully ported aftermarket TPI setup would do it

or better yet, the FIRST tpi setup with its huge ports. that may make 400whp on a 400+ inch motor.

but a 400+ inch LSx will be making near 500whp

ok, so what if we switch to a superam or miniram? would it be doable? anyone got a formula? I would just like to break 11's or something if possible.

Re: what does it take for 400rwhp w/l98 + tpi?

A local guy did it...

Oh, wait. No he didnt. lol. Anyway, as far as a real TPI... he's the closest I know of. Maybe with a little more cam and some more head flow or this new intake base he's working on, it'll happen.

I have one around 400 at the crank with stock runners and plenum (just EGR walls knocked down). Ported Edelcrock base.

Yes. 486fwhp according to DD2K which should put me at 403rwhp. Once I get a decent enough tune on it to take it to a dyno, i'll do so and finish the tune on said dyno.

i'll believe it when i see it. i dont trust much in those simulators. either way that should be a stout combo if it does put down that much power

Re: what does it take for 400rwhp w/l98 + tpi?

FMU the DD2K is actually pretty accurate. I'll post up dyno sheets when I get'em.

You know, I really can't get over how many naysayers there are here at TGO in regards to high hp numbers with TPI. Nearly half the site is TPI. It's actually been somewhat difficult to get useful information in regards to my build due to the fact that several people would chime in with their "help" saying it can't be done. I say We should be proud of what we have and do anything possible to make them even quicker. Those Rustangs out there aren't getting any slower.

Re: what does it take for 400rwhp w/l98 + tpi?

For as long as i been on this site, i havent seen the numbers i'd like to have on my motor some day coming from LTR TPI setups. its just hard to make big numbers with them. siamesing and such just turns the TPI into a shorter runner intake, might as well get a miniram or HSR if your gonna cut up the TPI like that.

I cant wait to see your build viprklr. sounds promising.

Re: what does it take for 400rwhp w/l98 + tpi?

I opted for no siamesing of my runners. Check my sig for the major mods. I also have several pics of most things. No good engine pics yet. I tore the engine apart again to upgrade my injectors. The pics I do have of the engine are sun-washed.

Re: what does it take for 400rwhp w/l98 + tpi?

Let us know when you get those dyno numbers in I am sure we are all curious. They might be possible on a dynojet not as likely on a mustang dyno. TPI style intakes are very hard to simulate for due to the long runner design which doens't allow higher rpm power. There are so many naysayers because none of us has seen it. The fact that it is not even a stroker setup makes your goal even tougher. Anyone rememeber the comp cams dyno comparison of intakes on a built 383? those motors with aftermarket intakes such as the hsr and mini ram were able to make 500fhp. Lofty target with a 350.

Yeah I don't believe it myself but still would like to see those numbers with the AFR Eliminators and TPI since I have a set sitting on the bench

Re: what does it take for 400rwhp w/l98 + tpi?

I'll definitely post up some numbers when I get them. It's just going to take a bit due to the extensive tuning that i'm going to have to do. I think I'll bookmark this thread so that when I get them i'll put them here. In reality though it'll probably be either the end of this season or sometime next year before I get it dialed in enough. The car collects dust in my garage over the winter.
