305 TPI Head Question??

I have a pair of 305 TPI heads that came off my 87 Trans Am with the 305. Will these 305 heads work for any 305 V-8 TBI or Carb. with center bolt valve covers and the 87 up intake bolt pattern. I'm not sure if the TPI intake is the only intake that will work on these heads. Thanks for any help. Jason

The heads will work with any intake manifold that has the correct bolt pattern for the 87 and later heads.

Check the pushrod area and see if the heads have machined-in guideplates. Later model centerbolt heads require self-aligning rockers whereas early models do not. Your '87 heads probably do not.

I ported a set of '88 centerbolt heads, and installed them on my '84 two-piece L69 block. In addition, I used an early Edelbrock Performer manifold. I had to enlongate the center holes in the Performer manifold to attach the intake bolts, but I did not do anything other than enlongate the holes. There are no vacuum leaks, cooland leaks, or anything unnatural. It worked fine. So, for the most part, you CAN mix and match, as long as you stay aware of teh aligning versus non-aligning rocker arms.

Again, look at the heads and where the pushrod passes through the head casting. If you see a big hole there, then you need self-aligning rockers. If you have a small hole (or slot) which is within .015" the diameter of the pushrod, then you do not need self-aligning rocker arms.
