Which _BIG_ K&N for GTA?? W/in
Hey all,
I've got an 88 GTA, and I've seen people with the same car that took out the ENTIRE black airbox, and stuck a high K&N Air Filter there.
Anyone know the part number?
Thanks

I don't have the part number, but it won't work very well on your car anyway. If you mount the air filter right on your TB like you are talking about you just eliminated your MAF sensor, and these cars don't run very well (if at all) without one.
Those filters are mainly made for the 90-92 speed density cars.

Leave the tubing, but stick a big K&N cone filter on the end of it, like the 4th gen kits have.

How would one of the conical systems work on my 91?
Ive heard that Ram-Air is better.

you could stick the cone onto the end of your stock airpipe where it connects to the airbox (if it has the right kind of joint). If the end is not round, then you can take the stock airbox and buy a K&N to fit...then you could cut out parts of the stock airbox to allow more flow. don't get one of those that sticks on the end of the TB, you'll only be sucking hot air.

I put one of those conical k&n's in place of my airbox. I forget the part number though.. just get the one that has a 3.5" opening and stick it to the end of your intake pipe. I removed the vapor canister and airbox mounting plate to give enough room for the filter. I couldn't tell you if it is any better than the stock box, but it's only 30 bucks or so, and it looks a lot better than the box. One day if you get really ambitious you could fabricate a aluminum pipe or something and it would look better than the stock plastic intake tubing..
IMHO I'd recommend the SLP Cold Air Induction setup for your car if you have the cash. Mine cost about $200 a few years ago. I run a K&N inside the box (you only need one filter despite Summit saying you need two). Sucks cold air from underneath the car and you get the benefit of the K&N breathing.

I ended up ordering a Conical K&N Generic filter from Jegs, with the 3 1/2" diameter opening for $35 incl shipping. It fit RIGHT in place of the black airbox, which I removed by using a 13mm socket on the one bolt that was holding it down, and viola! I clamped it on to the tubing from the TB, after the MAF, and it works perfectly
DEFINETLY Noticed an difference after installing, and I love it! I recommend it to anyone!
BTW, the car was an 89gta, TPI (obviously)
