The TPI intake unit itself is identical. The cam is different, and the 88 accessory setup is serpentine while the 87 is v-belts. Otherwise, no difference.

Ok thanks, that clears up any doubts, but anyways, my main reason for the question is. My 87IROC that is heavily modded used to be a stock 305tpi 5-speed. the only thing not modded on the car is the 5-speed now...as you can see from the sig line below. Now i NEED a custom 350chip. But i can't afford a custom one now and don't have all the time in the world to learn the talent in making my own as of yet. I hope to do that next year sometime. I have a chance to get a 88 350 hypertech chip to tide me over or atleast to help clear up some of these codes that are being thrown.
Only other variable that i need to find out is if the chip is for a stick or auto.

What do you guys think of me getting this chip if i can?

Well since they only made 350 cars with auto's I would guess that the chip is for an automatic. Hope this helps!

Thanks, i forgot all about them only coming with auto's... i should have known that.
What exactly is the difference in chips , between a manual and auto?
I mean what would happen if i put it in anyways? The tranny isn't electronically controlled anyways right?

If you want some unsolicited advice, switch that tranny before you do anything else. That 87 T5 is the weaker version, and probably wont last very long if you go to the track with it. Try to find an 88-92 World Class T5, its a direct swap.

Second, I'm using a 92 350 TPI chip in my 91 350 T5 setup. It works fine, except for the shift lite. But we have different computers, so I dont know if its the same for the MAF setups.

Actually 87 was a split year for the world class t5. My 87 t5 is a world class. If the outer race for the counter shaft bearing Has numbers around the outside and is a dull grey in the middle than it is a t5 wc. Wish I had pics. The non wc will look almost like a freeze plug. Im talking about the cap that is the outer race, its right below the input shaft slightly to the pass side. If it is a world class it will last for a while. Mine was behind my 383 for 8000 hard mile s before it self destructed. The diff in the chips is that a stick wants a slightly different spark curve and the stick chip uses the iac to keep the revs up while you shift.

Well thats the first I've heard of 87 having world class T5's... I've always heard it was 88+.

Thats what I thought when I went to rebuild mine. Ended up costing me about a hundred bucks in shipping from the mistake. I told the guy it was a non wc, gave the teeth count on the countershaft and everything. Ended up I had a 87 wc. They made wc and non wc units with the same exact ratios. The big diff between the 2 is the Wc has tapered countershaft bearings, and different synchros. While the non wc has straight bearings on the countershaft.
