Air temperature sensor relocation.

Are there any drawbacks to relocating the manifold air temperature sensor to a place in the air cleaner assembly? I hear that it gives the computer data that is closer to what it is actually supposed to be getting.

It makes your car run richer, as the computer seeing colder temps makes it give more fuel. I had to put mine back to stock as I was running too rich. But if you're lean, its a great way to get more fuel.

from what I've read in the code the TPI 3rd gens only use the IAT for a perimeter of when to apply the EGR. Mounting it in a cooler place just turns the EGR on less.

IAT (intake air temp?)-same as MAT? If one disables the EGR is the MAT necessary?

Like Kevin said, the MAT is for the ECM to see what temps are coming into the intake. It does delay the EGR control if it is too cold, but the MAT is not solely for EGR control.

When I did the MAT relocation I felt an immediate improvement to part throttle driving in low-speed, hot day driving. It made rush hour much nicer.

Hmmm...I'll have to try putting mine back . I've had a rich condition for quite some time and still haven't been able to figure it out , if this is the problem ....Kevin , I love you man
