Hello

How do I tell if a engine is a 350? when out of the car(so no vin to go by). Where on the block are the numbers and what will the 350 numbers be?

The block should have 5.7 stamped on the side towards the back. I forget if it's on the driver or passenger side, but it's fairly big so you should see it. Also you can measure the bore of the cylinders. A 350 has a 4 inch bore diameter.

Any small block later than 87 will have the size in Liters stamped in the back of the block, but anything earlier will have a number that you will have to look up. It is the left rear top of the block, right behind the cylinder head.

I remember 5.0 was stamped on my 86 305 engine, so it probably goes further back than 87, but I don't know what year the stamping started.
