OBD III Update
Greetings,
I just got back from some update training. One subject that was mentioned was OBD III. I hope your setting down for this. GM has it sitting there all ready to go. They are getting us use to it through OnStar and a couple of other programs. With OBD III you won't have to take you car to the local Emissions Station cause its built into the car. When you set an Emission Code, OnStar will notify GM and send you a Post Card telling you that you have 14 Days to fix the Problem. If you don't they'll just turn your car OFF.

Re: OBD III Update
Somehow I don't think that is going to help their sales unless all manufacturors have to do it.

Re: OBD III Update
well thats kinda dumb that would hurt sales alot i would think.. i wouldn't really like the idea of someone saying hey put your stock exhaust on or i'm turning your car off when you own the thing..

Also stated was that Hydrogen Cars would be out in 2-3 years. They have a company in Canada that is about done making a device to install in our homes to "Crack" Hydrogen out of Natural Gas.

Re: OBD III Update
my understanding is with onstar, after a set amount of time, the subscription expires.
question, with OBD3, do you have to pay for it?
i can see huge law suits if they do shut down someone's car,
"i was taking my wife to the hospital & my car stalled, i forgot my cell phone & because of complications both my wife & baby died before help got there,....."
if i were to buy a new car, it will not communicate with anything or anyone without my say so. things that would not be on my car, anti lock brakes, factory antitheft, DRLs, & air bags. the PCM or BCM would have no control over running lights, the radio, power windows, A/C, or windshield wipers.
there really isn't a need to Crack" Hydrogen out of Natural Gas.
this company makes hydrogen using solar power,

Re: OBD III Update
We were just talking about that same situation yesterday at the local parts store. The owner stated that GM would have a "New Name."
Thats a neat link. I'm going to have to look at it alittle closer when I've got more time.

My guess is as good as your's. My thinking its part of the same system acting independently. OnStar Subscription may run out, but the Emissions Monitoring goes on.

Re: OBD III Update
I can't see them remotely turning off your car either for reasons that DENN_SHAH said. If they did make that though I think it would be so satisfying to have all of that stuff programed out of the computer, remove all of the emissions equipment from the car, and send everything to GM in a box labeled "BITE ME!"

Re: OBD III Update
they would never "turn it off"
they say they could but never will. this has been said years back when they were still using obd I and the obd II was in the works. it is more likely to have a smog test update once a year VIA the onstar method and then the EPA would give you some warnings and hand out a fine. the only way I could see the car being disabled is if it was reported stolen and was not driving. or maybe you kept driving after fines and such.
GM is not the bad guy (they just do stupid things from time to time) they have rules they have to follow and usually try there best to get things working long befor the gov. issued dead line.
