383 stroker with a stock tpi unit
Is it possible to use a stock tpi on a 383?? Just to tie me over till I can get enough money for a super ram. I am assuming I will need a custom chip, right??

You can use a stock TPI unit on virtually any SBC, just don't expect it to perform optimally and you won't be disappointed.
Yes, a custom PROM would definitely help. Again, it MAY run, but it will be far from optimal. The biggest risk you will run is running lean (which could toast your motor). But if you install larger fuel injectors, it will help compensate for the larger displacement.
As for the custome PROM, check into burning your own PROM. The actual process of burning your own PROM is not hard and the equipment is not that expensive. Depending on who you get your PROM from, you may find it cheaper than your first PROM, definitely cheaper if you have to get a second PROM.
Lastly, getting a PROM (even a custome one from a good PROM burner) will not necessarily be optimal for your engine...it will still be a bit of a compromise. Similar to sending a carb to a "tuner" and having him pre-set everything. It will probably run, may even perform well, but it still will probably need to be adjusted to get it run optimally. (There is a lot more to that comparison than you might think).

As long as you're running at least 350 injectors and chip you'll get by for the time being. go ahead and get an afpr now since you'll need it later and the extra pressure can help those injectors keep up.

A friend of mine with a 383 87 IROC, automatic, made 225 HP and 360 TQ at the rear wheels. He's desparately saving for a SuperRam now.

You could replace the base of the TPI with a big mouth base, get new runners, and port the plenum, that would open up the intake a fair amount.
