I'm gettting a code 44, which according to my Haynes manual indicates a lean condition. However, my exhaust smells rich. Could this be a bad O2 sensor? What are the other possibilities. It idles a little rough once it's warmed up, bouncing between 600 and 750 rpms. The car still runs good otherwise. I'm hesitant to run it if I am indeed getting a lean condition. I don't want to do any serious damage.

Pull the sensor out and if it is black and sooty, than the sensor has failed and fooled the computer into thinking that it is running lean so the computer overcompensated for a condition that didn't exist.
Even if it isn't black and sooty, a new sensor is always a good starting point when you are dealing with oxygen sensors. Good luck.
