Ported Stock Manifold vs. Ported Edelbrock

What are the flow differences between a ported stock manifold and a ported Edelbrock intake manifold? Is the Ported Edelbrock worth the extra $300 over a ported stock manifold? Which one is better for my mods and price is a concern. Thanks

Hey Blue,

I just asked the same question - look a little further down the page to the post that says "Convince me an aftermarket intake is worth it". I've been debating this for a year, and swore I wouldn't take the intake off again without replacing it, but I have! Everyone claims the stock intake, fully ported, still can't match the aftermarket intakes.

IM in the middle of installing my 406. so I was just comparing the Accel base to the stock base. And there is no way in hell a stock base can be ported to out flow an out of the box Accel base. If youve ever seen the two side buy side and looked thru the ports you would Know what IM talking about. If you can... get an aftermarket base.

IMO the base is the most resrictive part of the system. IF I had it to do over I would replace the base before the runners.

Heres a few flow numbers for Accel stuff. Sorry no can do on the Edelbrock.

Stock base, Accel runners 213.5 cfm
Accel base, stock runners 215.8 cfm
Accel base, Accel runners 232.5 cfm
Accel base, Accel Super Ram 240.2 cfm
Accel base, extruded Accel runners 243.2 cfm
Extruded Accel base & runners 266.9 cfm

If you have porting experience, know what you're doing, and have the TIME, then I believe the stock base can be fully ported (entire length - not just an inch or so) to give an excellent power / torque curve. I like it anyway!!

------------------
86 IROC - 9.8:1 - 355, TFS twisted wedge heads, 218/228-110, fully ported GM base and plenum, SLP runners, 52mm BBK, 24# SVO, 1 5/8" Headman headers, 2.5" Dynomax, TH350, 2200 stall, B&M Megashifter, 3.23 peg leg, 245/45ZR17s on 212 Eagles
Best run - 12.53/112.4 on 26x11.5 ET Streets.

Edelbrock, Accel, and TPIS sell aftermarket intake manifolds. AS&M sells their ported stock one. Edelbrocks is about $400, Accel's is about $450, and TPIS's is $475. TPIS uses an Edelbrock casting and port-matches it to an intake manifold gasket.
