That was a speed density set up you were looking at. It elimates the MAF. A lot of people like it for it's tuning capabilities.

Yeah, the cars you see that on is he "speed density" cars, meaning they don't have a MAF sensor. These type of filters are not good though. They suck hot air directly from the radiator and kill performance. I once had a TB mounted filter like that and I did extensive testing with it. I found that with the TB mounted filter, my track times were very inconsistant. Since I didn't have a manual fan switch, I had to rely on the computer to turn the fan on. Well, when the temps went up, my track times went up also. When the fans kicked on, and the temps went down, so did my times.
After installing a Cold Air Intake to replace that TB mounted filter, I gained .2 in the 1/8 mile, and also gained consistancy. I could hit my dial-in every single time, not just when the fans came on.

You will see this setup on lots of TPI swaps. In my swap, into a 93 C1500, it was the only option that I could have used. When I switch over to electric fans I will be replacing it with a Firebirds filter/duct system.
In the image you can see that there was not enough room for anything else to fit.
