Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
Hey 1bad91 sorry if I missed this but overall did you raise the lid about a good 1/2 inch?
Thank you. I will talk to you about it next summer.

Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
I decided that I had to give this a try. I first built my ram air boxes and those turned out so well that I decided to move ahead on the air lid. I opened it up, leaving the leading edge of each filter cover housing attached and used my heat gun to soften the plastic and spread the body of the lid, adding 1/2 " at the thinnest point.
I visited a local plasitc supplier and purchased remnants of 1/8" and 1/4 " plastic and two part acrylic adhesive. I didnt buy the cartridges or the mixing gun. Im only making one box and didnt feel the purchase made sense.
Ive just now sealed up the front portion of the lid. When the glue dries, Ill start on the back. So far it looks like it will turn out fine. Still need to get a 3 1/2" pipe coupling (4" od) from the hardware store.

Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
Im almost done with my lid. This was alot of work and a bit scary since you have to virtually destroy the OE lid to make the hi flow peice. Once you start, there's no turning back. Several hours over several days, $80 in materials, and its finally about there. I followed Ibad91's design with a bit of modification. BTW, I should have said 3" PVC pipe coupling. Mike said he gets his at Lowes. I had to go to an irrigation supplier and pay $9 for it. No hardware store had 3" PVC.
At any rate, Im excited to be getting it done. I am pleased with how its come together. For other's edification, if you have the money, its well worth $300 to purchase the peice from Mike. In hindsight, while I love to build things like this, I would say its almost not worth it when you can have one made for such a reasonable price. I can say from experience, Mike's not making much on these boxes. Not for all the time it takes.
Cant wait to see the results. Putting my wide band AFR monitor together now and have the laptop ready to go with my CALMAP software. I know that this air lid, along with the ram air, will require changes to my base fuel map to compensate for the addition air at higher speeds. Almost wish I had MAF right now but I think I can make this work since the additional air will result in an increase in MAP for which I can adjust accordingly. Just have to make some runs to find out.

Making custom parts does take time along with the materials and tools. A number of people do not realize the time and effort that goes into it. I agree in that $300 is probably well worth it.

lol ! Yea it's true, for the time and materials it takes to make each one, I really dont make much more than fast-food wages!!
I use the 4 inch coupler on mine though...
Hope yours turns out well!

4 inch?! I went by your picture! Lol. At any rate, the peice I got was 4" od and it fits the 4" silicone hose perfectly. I just applied the first coat of paint and Im waiting for it to dry. It wont look nearly as clean as yours but Ill be proud to display it at the local car shows this coming summer. Got my Moroso vacuum pump back yesterday too. Now a little fuel line work and waiting for my brakes to get here from Fly N' Bye. Very exciting. Oh boy, oh boy!

"24lb bosch @ 70 psi"
What setup are you running to get 70 psi fuel pressure? I am hoping to get 55 psi out of mine when I crank up the adjustment.

Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
Thank you for the compliment!
I don't have any more cores to make one for you. I would need your lid to modify.
Also, I won't have the time to do so until summer of next year. (I have a full time job, part time job on the weekends, and part time college student). I don't take summer courses, so if you can hold out until then, I may be able to make one for you.

Well Its next year. Will you be making the lids again?

Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
Dont know if I'll be doing anymore of them.. the price of materials to make them has gone up and I dont have any more stock lids to make them with. If someone REALLY wants one, we can talk over PM, but currently I dont have any plans to make anymore.

Ok. I just got my new engine running and this looks like it would compliment it quite well. I tried to copy what you did before but failed miserably.

Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
I was talked into building another one, it's about 70% complete. I should be finished with it before Christmas. Due to the holidays, this will be the last one I do this year. I will post pics when complete.
Happy Holidays!

Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
I shipped the one I was working on a week or two ago.. Enjoy Brian!
I may also have another one available soon.
As far as dyno results, I haven't got any numbers back from the ones I've built, but there are some that picked up some ET and mph in the 1/4 with the high-flow lid. I definitely noticed a gain on my car.
Good luck!

Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
I have a high-flow lid with connecting tube available if anyone is interested. This is one I built awhile back for one of my personal cars that I sold. I will not be building anymore due to material cost and lack of free time. PM me if you are interested!

Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
I haven't been on the boards in awhile - got busy with life and a new house. But, I saw this post in my e-mail, and I wanted to chime in. I got one of these lids a few years back and can attest to the quality of the lid. I'm really glad I got one instead of attempting to make my own, and 1bad91Z is a knowledgeable guy and a great person to work with.

Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
Here are the pics as promised. This is the last opportunity to own one of my lids as I will not be fabricating anymore of them.
pic lid3 shows inside the connecting sleeve with the aluminum insert down to the 4 inch inlet of the lid.
The lid comes with the sleeve and clamps. (Everything you need to connect it to the throttle body).
Enjoy!

Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
Probably not.. There is a slim chance maybe after first of the year but that depends greatly on work schedule. I will post here if and when I do make another.

BUMP since this is information that can help. I really can't believe a bigger Air Lid was never moreso mass produced
Love the Idea, I'm going to have to try and do something like this for my engine soon, And somehow get a bigger maf as well since I am not fully enticed by the idea of switching over to Speed Density.

Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
Would need to attach to a MAF housing like this one https://www.amazon.com/Spectre-Perfo.../dp/B003J9IXT4 Might even need to install this in place of the PVC fitting or there may not be room for the MAF? I haven't got the motor in the car yet to see how much room there is.

Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
Something to consider:
The air box holds two filters. Each with an area of about 36 square inches for a total of 72 square inches.
K and N specs the following for filtering requirements: Area = (CID X RPM) / 20 839
If your LS7 (at 427 CID) revs to 6000 RPM then 122 square inches of filter media is required. Clearly, there is not enough filtering media to support the expected air flow requirements.
Yes, we all know Joe or Sally who has a 700 HP engine running through a tiny filter and they are just fine. Kind of makes you think what their results might be if they had a properly spec'd air filtration system doesn't it?

Re: High-flow TPI Camaro air lid
I can't find the thread at the moment however another member here has successfully fitted a pair of cone shaped filters beneath where the stock filter elements would normally be. Installation looked pretty slick and needed a few pieces of ABS plastic to adapt the cone filter bases.

TTT... If anyone's had success making these, I have a core lid and we could work a price. Or if anyone is interested in selling a spare, PM me.
