Mystery Problem
Ok guys, I can't figure this one out. Here's a little background on the car first. Its a 1992 RS, 305/700r4. I've converted the TBI to TPI using a badly wrecked but running 92 z28 lb9. I had the luxury of a complete, uncut wiring harness and compter from a running donor. The swap went great, no problems, car ran fine. I had to park it for a few years beucase of transmission problems, and kind of lost interest. I did start the car regualrly to make sure none of the hoses or belts dry rotted or anything. Now I want to get it back on the road.
I fixed the tranny, put some fresh fuel in the tank, and thought all would be well. I started it up and it was running great, but when I went to back out of the driveway, and the car stalled. Couldn't get it running again. I changed the fuel filter, that didn't help. I've changed the spark module too (the thing under the dist. cap), no help there either. My fuel pressure is reading 45 when you turn the key on, then drops to 41 when the fuel pump relay clicks off. It will start, run at about 350rpm for a few seconds, and die. It maintains a steady 38-41 psi at the rail.
I noticed while changing the Spark module that the coil peg on the cap was loose, and the spring on the contaact inside felt weak. Could that be the problem maybe? Could this just be bad 3 year old gas?
Any help or thoughts are appreciated!
Dave

Re: Mystery Problem
Check for spark?
Pull some of those spark plugs and look at the condition.
When a car sits for awhile you are supposed to do a few things to ensure that moisture doesn't build up in the engine, etc etc.
Gas separates when it sits for awhile and it separates into water and something else. If you didnt empty the tank before putting the fresh gas in, that could be a problem. My TPI hates cheap gas, much less gas with water in it.
Stabil added to the gas helps keep the gas from separating. What you can do is take out some of the gas into a glass jar and let it sit for an hour, you will see it separate into two different parts if it has a lot of water in it.
You might want to disconnect the MAF, if it has one, and see if it will run... as a last resort.
