Im a happy man today!

I pulled of my TPI intake manifold in about an hour ( i heard it could be a nightmare)

no bolts seized, only one was really in there and i got it.

Also found it got a roller cam ( previous owner was a hack) i thought he may have swapped a older block in ( Self aligning rockers + roller lifters! ) means its Original, mostly, still could be a 305.. but im happy

If u guys want i can take pics as i start to pull the waterpump etc, and then pull the cam out

anyway, IM HAPPY i didnt have any problems so far!

also, any advice for when i put the intake back on as far as putting sealant on the threads etc

thanks!

Re: Im a happy man today!

Put sealant with Teflon on all the bolts. Some don't go into water jackets but bah.

Re: Im a happy man today!

another question

at a minimum what do i need to run this cam ( zz4) because ive been reading after .460 the valve seals die. I dont care about that at this point... Im worried about my valve hitting the piston at .510 with stock springs and rockers will they?

And if so do i only need springs to prevent this?

Re: Im a happy man today!

Stock springs are only good to .450 lift on both sides (intake and exhaust). You need to upgrade springs/locks/reatainers to go with a .510 cam if you plan on your motor living awhile. Get the correct matched cam kit from Comp to match your cam.

Re: Im a happy man today!

I have been running the ZZ3 (ZZ4,same thing) cam with stock heads and stock shortblock for years of "spirited" driving. With the cam installation I installed ZZ3/ZZ4 valve springs to prevent coil bind. While rotating the motor BY HAND, I had valve guide to valve keeper inteference. Instead of getting the valve guides machined to eliminate the interference, I (gasp) trimmed the bottom edge of the keepers (~.02"-.03"). I know it's not the correct method, and yes I did have nightmares about dropping a valve, but 30K miles later and a few trips 6200 RPMs, no problems (maybe I should say, 'Don't try this at home'...). Nice cam, decent gains.

Re: Im a happy man today!

You will experience valve float until you change the springs. Just wait to drive it until the springs get installed.
