A tale of one 85 Iroc Z and one good tune up
A friend of mine just purchased a 1985 IROC Z with an automatic and 305 TPI. the car has a newer disc brake 3.42 posi, long tubes and no cat. When he bought the car I told him to gut the air boxes, he did. He brought it to town after installing new plugs and wires and this thing was a D O G. I took it across town to set the timing and a kid in town with a 3 cylinder Subaru Justy (This is so Fing emberassing I couldn't make this up!) absolutly slaughtered it on a roll TWICE!!! After some issues setting the timing I finally got it dialed in at 10 degrees and the car was better but it still sucked. It had a hard time beating out a freaking 1998 Chevy Malibu with the AC on. Finally I got him to pull the distributor and swap the coil out tonight. The car absolutly came alive and outran a Oldsmobile Aurora by half track. I just wanted to post this up to show how important a thurough tune up can be. Also we're going to start with the free mods soon, the only one done as of yet is the air box that came with K and N filters, next on the list is the ported plenum and siamesed, ported base. If I can talk him into it I'll get him to take it to the track and get some baselines them take it back when the free mods are complete.
