Edelbrock hi flow problems
Edelbrock hi flow problems
I've heard of the fuel rail problems some have had with the Edelbrock Hi Flow base. I'm wondering if I have the same thing. I cannot put the runners on with the fuel rail bolted down. I asked Edelbrock about using the supplied 4 washers to raise the fuel rail, but they are for something else. Any ideas?

What you will need to do is get the fuel rails in place, with the bolts in, and let them sit like that. Then bolt the runners on. After you are all done then you can bolt the fuel rails down. That's what I had to do on my 91 Z. Just take your time and things will start to come together.

I have no problem with my fuel rails but I did have a probelm bolting the cap on the distributer. The screw was going thougth the hole and hitting intake thats how close it comes. But my car doesnt run now and I have no idea why
I saw that post, but Edelbrock says the supplied washers are for the coil, not the fuel rail. I could loosen the fuel rail and put the runners on, but I'm an a$$ and I think things should work the way they promise. So now, I'm edelbrock's problem.
This is great news...I hope I don't have the same problem with the brand new Edelbrock Hi-Flow base & runners I just received! I'm expecting a fuel rail any day now, so the first thing I'm going to do is test fit it and see if I have the same problem as you.

So I test fit the Hi-Flo base, runners, tb and plenum and I see that I'll need to grind a bit of material off one of the runner tubes at the bottom just to be able to bolt it up. Cool...(is there a specific left/right side runner?). Also, did you guys receive a set of runner to plenum gaskets or just the lower gaskets? What gaskets am I supposed to use for the large tube runners and a port matched plenum? They also jipped me on the pipe plugs that were supposed to be included witht the base according to the instruction sheet! Just couldn't take the extra 5 seconds and toss those required parts in the box, could they! Dammit...
Two people at Edelbrock have said that they've never had any problems with the setup or heard of the low fuel rail problem. I'm kicking myself for not going to a four barrel intake with a new TB. Would've cost less and performed better.
Just got the lower gaskets too. You'll have to get a set of stock uppers and cut them out, or some aftermarket places sell bigger ones I'm told. What pipe plugs are you talking about? Left vs. Right depends on your year. Pre 89 has a hole for the cold start injector on the driver's side runners.

I got my Edelbrock base last fall and installed it over winter. I have the SLP runners so I always have had to loosen the fuel rail a little bit to get the runners to fit in place.
The problem I had when installing the injectors on the new base is the supports that the fuel rail bolts into was too short. This caused my injectors to bind. I have heard other people complain that this caused their injectors to stay wide open causing their car to run extremely rich. I identified the problem before I had the entire intake together by trying to move the injectors. On my stock intake I could move the injectors back and forth slightly. On the new Edelbrock base the injectors would not budge because the bottom of the injector was being forced into the intake casting causing it to bind (with the fuel rail bolted down). I ended up buying four washers and installing them between the fuel rail and base. This took the bind out of the injectors and allowed some back and forth movement on the injector.
Oh ya, the first time I received the Edelbrock intake from Summit it was defective because the hole that is drilled for the EGR bolt went all the way through the runner passageway. They sent me a second one and I there was no problem except for the fuel rail height.
I'd be more concerned about the injectors seating properly. My .02. Hope that helps.

hey guys i am one of the first people to have this problem, edelbrock is full of **** saying that they never heard of it becasue i personally spoke to them many times... anyway to diagnose it real easy, just put on a fuel pressure gauge and turn the key on, if the fuel pressure goes up and then immediatley goes to 0 then your injectors are binding , so put some washers under the fuel rail bolts.. if the pressure stays then you are fine.. good luck guys and FUC-K EDELBROCK and their horrible casting methods

The engine's not in the car, so I can't check the fp yet. I wanted to figure this mess out before I started it up. Maybe I can use a mirror to look at the injectors in the manifold runners and see where they're at. Plus, now you got me thinking if I checked the runners for overdrilled holes. Where's that mirror on a stick?

Hmm?!? I didn't have any of the problems you guys are talking about except one: I didn't get all the plugs for unused holes. Everything bolted right up, I thing I got the gaskets, but am not sure if they came with the the base or the AS&M Large tube runners ( I test assembled everything and put it all back in a box where it sat for 4 months before installation).
Good luck and I hope everything works out for you guys.

I also had this injector binding problem with my edelbrock intake and Ron and I sent several e-mail to each other getting this sorted out.
87IROC350 describes the same problem I was having.
You want to get all the injectors to set down in the intake the same amount. On mime I used thicker washers under the driven side fuel rail than on the passengers side, so that all the injectors had the same fit. You will just have to eyeball this and use a little common sense. You can unbolt the fuel rail and change washers pretty fast so it shouldn't be that big a deal.
I used the stock runners with my intake and had no problem with them bolting up.

I've been following your guy's post because I'm putting an Edelbrock base on my new engine. I don't really understand what you mean by the injectors binding. Can someone please explain this.

ok mine is running good now. i didnt have any problems with the fuel rails. Only problem I had was bolting the inside bolts on my AS&M Runners.
Paul,
Read 87IROC350s reply just a few up, it explains the injector binding problem in detail.
The way I noticed this on my intake was when I went to hook up the injectors connectors. On the driver side I couldn't get the connectors on the injectors because they were binding in the intake and I couldn't turn/twist them to get the connectors attached.
