Test an ECM?
I bought a TPI set up off an 86' couldn't get it to start. Now I'm thinking about trying to put it on again. Is there anyway to test the ECM to see if it's what's bad?
Would the MAF being bad keep it from starting? Because the tiny bit I did get it to run when I pulled the codes that's one that it pulled.
I could only get it to start with WOT and only could get it to run with WOT. When I did that it ran as rich as it could, and I mean RICH.
I also didn't have the fuel pump wired through the computer will that effect it?
I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thanks alot!

Re: Test an ECM?
If the MAF was bad it usually will start up and then stall or not start at all sometimes. By disconnecting the MAF, a default valve will be used by the computer. See if this fixes your problem.

Re: Test an ECM?
I already disconnected the mass air sensor and tried that when I had the setup on my car. Mind you I do not have the setup on my car right now. I am driving my car with a carburetor. just trying to figure out what was wrong with it before I try to put it on again.
I got the HEI module tested today, it test just fine. I bought a brand new electronic spark control module while I had it on the car the last time. Had the injectors tested 3 were bad so I bought reman ones and it still didn't run.
TPS seems to be working because the only way I could get it to fire and sometimes start was holding the accelerator wide open, and when I pulled the codes off the computer it came back with the TPS wide open code.
I wish someone would tell me if you can even test the computer because if you can't then I'll just buy one and see what I can do.
Rockauto.com has 88' ECM's for some where around $78 does anyone know if that comes with the calpak?
Again Thanks for any help you can give me.

Re: Test an ECM?
The only good way to test an ECM is on a bench with simulated loads and inputs, or in a vehicle with the loads and inputs connected.
Most replacement ECMs will not include a CALPAK/MEMCAL, since one ECM can service several vehicles.
If yolu had shorted injectors, there is a chance that the injector output driver transisotors are damaged, and may be operating the injectors full time (thus, the rich condition). You can test those, but testing the entire ECM is tedious without a bench or vehicle connected.

Re: Test an ECM?
I'm kinda thinkin you might be right about the injectors bein open all the time. So I'm guessing the "injector output driver trasistors" are in the ECM, am I right?
Re: Test an ECM?
Yes, the injector driver is in the ECM, along with all the other load driver transistors. They are mounted to a heat sink rail, along with the outputs for a few other higher current devices, like the IAC. Many of the outputs for light-load devices are mounted directly to the circuit board with no heat sinks:

The circuit is something like the attachment.

Re: Test an ECM?
oh does it matter what ecm i get? the setup came off of an 86. but my car is an 87(so still no vats) but thats in the prom anyways if i remember right. Rockauto.com has several listed under the 88 year(heard it was the best year for the programing with the cold start injector, but again thats ont the prom). They have all the numbers listed but I don't know what they all are. There was one that was like $77 or $78 with no core charge the rest were similarly priced but had about $75-85 core charges.
I'd like to get the one with no core if it would work because that's alot less hassle.
Thanks for all the help.
