Dealer says i need new ECM
Well my car was having problems starting heres the orginal thread https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...y-running.html so i decided to bring it to my local shop after changing countless parts, the shop i brought it to also could not find what was wrong so they brought it to the dealership. THe dealer said it needs a new ECM and new injectors. The part i dont understand is why it would also need new injectors wouldn't the car be ok with just a new ECM? or when u change the ecm u need to replace the injectors as well? For the parts, they quoted me a ridiculous amount so i will get the parts elsewhere and do the work myself. How difficult is it to replace the ECM and how would u go about doing it...i dont know where it is located. Any help would be greatly appriciated. thanks

Find a different mechanic.
I'm gonna say the dealer had absolutely no clue what was wrong with the car. So if I read your other post right, aside of the non-starting, when you step on the gas it tries to die, right? But it does run? Check your TPS voltage and see if its within range and operating properly.

well the car does run, when it is idling it will rev and not stall or die but when u take it for a drive it will drive as long as u dont give it too much gas once it give it 1/2 throttle it will just shut down, the rpms just start to fall and hitting the gas pedal has no affect.

You may have an injector issue. Test each injector with an ohm meter (preferably when the problem is happening) with the engine off. If one or more are way out of range try running the motor with them disconnected. The car may actually run better without the bad injectors connected.
The multec injectors in our cars is known for this. My car sounded just like yours before I replaced my injectors. Search the board for more info on this.

if the fuel psi is not dropping when you give it gas then I would suspect the injectors but I don't clearly see you doing a fuel psi test under load? I wonder why they would say it needs a pcm? unless you have other issues we don't know. anycase the popping and what you describe is fuel related with out a doubt

It's feasible that if the injectors are so far gone that they can actually short the injector drivers in the ECM.

Re: Dealer says i need new ECM
had almost the same problem with an 89 formula, crappy multec injectors. I had one reading 3 ohms, it was pulling down the injector driver in the ecm, replaced the injector and it ran fine. The ecm is pretty tough on these cars so you probably don't need a new one. Here is what I would do: get the car back, check each injector with an ohm meter and determine which one is bad, unplug the defective injector and try to start the car. it should start and run with a miss if not to many are bad.
