Without VIN, how can you visually identify a 305 TPI from a 350 TPI?

 

Some of the ways I have heard are the 350 cars will all have rear disc brakes. They should have 5000 yellow and 5500 redline on the tach and the shifter **** should be almost square. If you can get to the RPO's in the console, look for B2L. This is all I know, good luck.

You didnt mention what year the car was.
Also you cant go by what brakes the car has. Someone was misinformed. My 85 ta has disc brakes at all four wheels . That does not make it a 350 . It justs makes it a ta with the disc brakes. Is the car a ta, or a z28 ?

When I had my heads worked on and rear seal changed the mechanic told me that the code was stamped on the block by the rear of the engine close to the Bell housing area which stated that I had a 305

 

you can't go by the tack. I noticed that 86 reds at 5000 and 87 higher 88 5000 and 89 same as 87. there is a spot on the frount of the heads on the 305 tpi it looks like two mountains and on the 350 it looks like two lines It is hard to explain but, if any one has the 305 and 350 heads stand them up on end and look at the two. you can see them while they are in the car but, it may be hard with out knowing what you are really looking for.

 

Thanks for the responses, forgot to mention...car is a '89 Z28,auto,without discs. The engine is still in the car, so I can't see too much as far as casting marks.

 

Sorry, I didn't explain myself right. I have heard that all 350 cars had rear disc's. I know you could get them on the 305's, but www.iroc-z.com says the 350's all had disc's. If you look there, go to facts and figures and go all the way down to the bottom of the page, that's were I got the info from. Good luck
