I think my timing is off. How do I adjust it?
I've been having problems with my car running rough lately. It only started doing it after I swapped in the 6 speed, installed headers, and put in the Holley ignition. All of this was done at the same time. The car feels like it stutters when I really get on it, mostly in the higher rpms. I've known something was wrong and my thoughts were confirmed last night when I only ran a best of 16.1 at 86 mph. I know it is pathetic. Before I did the before mentioned things, I ran a best of 14.75 at 96 mph. I suspect that my ignition is the culprit, mainly my timing. I might just unhook the Holley box and run with the stock ignition to see if that fixes the problem. Otherwise, I need to know how to check and adjust the timing. I might have access to a computer scanner when I go home next weekend so that will tell me if my timing is off. I just don't have a clue from there. I know that base timing is set by rotating the distributor but that the rest is controlled by the computer. Someone please help me out. I can't have anymore embarrassing timeslips like that or I'll never hear the end of it. Thanks

You need to look for the EST bypass connector, on my '89 it's behind the pass. side strut tower, with the timng light hooked up to the #1 cyl, disconnect the EST bypass connector, and shoot the light at the Harmonic balancer, rotate the distributor until you're balancer mark lines up to the spot on the itming tab you want (anywhere from 6* BTDC, to 12*'s or so, depending on the motor, stock is 6*'s). Shut the motor off, connect the EST connector, and tighten the distributor hold down and take her for a spin.
