How much air do I need???
Hi, I just recently finished rebuilding my engine...I added AFR 190's, crane compucam w/ 1.6 rockers (total lift just under .5"), bored .030" over, all that good stuff. The performance isn't quite there b/c my intake is mostly stock (except for a K&N filter and and airfoil). I know I need to port the plenum...what else though? Should I get new runners? Do I need a 52mm TB? How much air does my engine need for max. performance compared to how much air it is getting? I wanna wake this motha up!
Thanks, Aaron

With those heads and the new cam you definately need more than the stock intake can give, it is hardly adequate for a stock 350. You should either do a good porting job on the base or get an aftermarket one and might as well do some porting on that! Runners are a must since the stock ones really can't be improved, AS&M is probobly your best bet. The plenum is easy to port and should present no problems. I'm not sure how restrictive the stock t-body is but on your motor a bigger one couldn't hurt. OR you could opt to go with another system such as the Superram or miniram.
I recently switched from a stock tpi on my 356 to a Superram upper with the stock base still. That yeilded about a 20 horse increase and with an aftermarket base another 20 should be easy.
good luck

'88 RS (originally 2.8)
-350, .040 over, vette alum. L98s, stock tpi.
-305 injectors & chip
-TES headers & edelbrock cat back
-3.73 gears, 700r4.
Best with 2.8-17.4@77mph
Best with 305-15.0@93mph
Best with 356-13.7@101mph
on a 2.050 60 ft.
(Damn the 2.8!)

The average human body respirates about 17,200 litres of air per day. Presuming you will live to the ripe old age of 100 years, you will need approximately 630 Million liters of air. Factoring for the number of times you will require increased air, like those episode of crazy-hot monkey sex and running marathons, you will more realistically use approximately 650million litres of air in your lifetime (your results may vary). Of course, much of that air will be recycled, or "used" air. The use of virgin pure air for extended periods can be cost prohibitive.
Oh, yeah... You really should get a better intake, since your car is probably at the point of being induction limited.

Thanks for the replies guys...Seeing as how I probably won't live until I am 100 years old, I don't think I'll need 650 million litres of air. Therefore, I will keep my intake system (mouth, trachea, lungs) stock for now. However, I'll look into a new base, runners and porting that plenum for my car.
Any other suggestions for my intake, er, I mean my car's intake system?

Try porting the plenum out for SLP runners that YOU must get completely siamesed, then take the base and join it almost down to the injectors. Port the rest on the roof (removing the injector notches) and match to the head.
A 52mm or bigger tb will help on this combo, and prom work is definate.
SLP runners can be had for dirt (compared to a whole new setup), you should get a much wilder cam for the heads you are using, screw the computer.... It will deal with a new prom for the 190cc intake volume (you'll need a chip most definate) and then you'll say WOW! The bottom end kicks as) and the top is pretty damn good too and shave a whole bunch of time off the 1/4
Basically you mismatched the components. A stock intake (choking everything), a mild cam (choking the heads) and a set of heads that scream for more.
If you are running a MAF car, a ported sensor will help quite a bit and pretty much is the way to go (don't go sd like alot of people do.... stick in there) but you need to take care of all these things to really get goin'
Sure you could get an aftermarket intake, but the money spent there will cover all these things and these mods will run you faster than just the intake alone.
Hope this helps....
