Intake Manifold plate Question

I have some ideas but I just am not sure so lets see what people think/know. What is the verdict as to what the purpose is of the metal tent-looking plate that bolts to the underside of the intake manifold on a stock TPI?

Keeps the hot oil from directly hitting the intake and heating it up.

I figured it was a heat protection device for the manifold. Thanks............
