Need Help with Distributor Install

My distributor will not go back in my 87 Trans Am 350 TPI. I installed a new LT4 Hotcam and I also got the distributor gear p/n 10456413. Well I think the gear is not lining up with the camshaft Why? What would cause this and how do I correct it? I still has almost 3" more to go down and I can still turn the rotor freely by hand? Any suggestions on what I should do as I have no clue as what to do now.

Check to make sure your oil pump drive shaft is lining up with the pump.As far as the dist lining up with the cam gear, when you try to get it in,turn the rotor with just enough back and forth motion to line it up.It won't be much at all.

As fas as I know the shaft is lining up. I can turn the shaft with a screw driver and I can here it sloshing the oil around. Is there any reason that the cam would not allow it to go all the way down? Any more input would be very helpful as I'm screwed as of now.

It should fall right in.You will need to press it down so the o-ring can compress into the block.

If your not using a o-ring,then I'm stumped too.

Problem solved. Turned out the new gear I bought was the problem. I went back to work and got my old gear to match them up they are the same size and everthing except the hole the shaft goes in is slightly larger on the new gear allowing it to slide sideways and not going into the hole in the block. Thanks for the help. Jason
