Changing Spark Plugs on SLP headered L98

I've done a spark plug change in these cars before, but all with stock exhaust manifolds. In a few days I am going to attempt to change them with SLP headers installed. I have yet to check clearances, but is it easier or more difficult to change them with the headers? Is it possible to even change them without special tools, I see SLP offers a special socket made for changing spark plugs.

Any tips or words from the wise?

YES!

Actually, most are easier, I can get to all of them from the top now!(Although some are still easier to get to from underneath!) You might need to cut down your spark plug socket and use an open end wrench on the back ones, I did. A flex head ratchet helps too.

Good Luck!

Ken

I ground down a spark plug socket and opened one side like a flare nut wrench, it works great.

Same here, cut about 5/8" off the end of a standard spark plug socket and use a wrench on the hex (opposite of cut end). I can change my plugs faster than with stock exhaust manifolds too.

Re: Changing Spark Plugs on SLP headered L98

did you guys do this for changing plugs on a stock setup ?

ive got a stock 305 TPI and ive been tackling my plugs today, ive changed 2 so far, the third one snapped off so i got a bit p***ed off and left it, i just had no room to get the rachet and my arms in there. I started on the right hand side, nearest the radiator, and working my way back to the firewall.

I think i might have to start cutting spark plug sockets tomorrow if thats the case, my plugs have been changed once before but i took it to a garage and the car was up on the ramp, then down on the ground, then up, then down etc etc, he ended up removing a mounting bracket for something to get at one !

I posted a thread a little over a year ago on commercial header sockets. I bought mine, am very happy. Believe they are available from Summit now.
