what is taking so long on vortec tpi intake
what is taking so long on vortec tpi intake
Called them again today. They still havn't gotten it yet. Man, my motor is almost together, I need that intake. I guess though they have gotten a lot of calls and will have plenty of them, so no running out.
Tell me about it I've been waiting since October!!! I'm about to try and mod a old TPI stock base....

It's amazing they built one to begin with. The tooling expense must be astronomical and think of how many they are gonna really sell. It's gonna take along time for them to recoup the design/build expense.
Notice SLP didn't kill themselves rebuilding the tooling for the T-Ram.

I guess they are done, but they just havn't gotten them. Then they have to look at them I guess. I called edelbrock a couple of weeks ago. They said they were just finishing it up and the egr was all done. Oh they said they had enough for everybody too!

I posted some info about this a little while back, so I thought I'd share it again.
I work for a local Chevy dealer as a tech, so I was wondering about this intake for awhile. I recently aquired a 5.7L longblock out of a GMC Sierra, originally planning to use the block and roller parts. I was originally planning on selling the Vortec heads because they're in great shape and thought someone would want them (nope). I found some info comparing these to ported L98 'Vette heads and found them to be similar stock. I called SD, and they told me that they already made a few manifolds. They don't see any problems, but want to make sure all possibilities of casting problems are solved before mass production. I guess this is due to a high production cost and complexity. The manifold is a high-flow replacement manufactured by Edelbrock for SD. The Vortec manifold and heads do not have EGR passages like older-style SB Chevy's, so they get EGR feed for the EGR valve through a tube into a manifold or header. The tube enters the manifold at the back near the distributor. Release was supposed to be the 20th of April, but has been delayed about 2 weeks. Price is supposed to be around $375. This is supposed to be compatible eith OEM-style and SR style TPI setups. All other equipment fits as stock. A price will not be set until the manifold is given a GM part number. Looks like you guys better buy from SD direct, since it'll cost you more buying through your local dealer (I looked into it, cost me more even with my employee discount!)because of mark-up.
Hopes this clarifies things. I'm looking to get one to for these Vortec heads. I hope they have a 'introductory' price! You can see pictures at their website, but I'm not sure what that is

. I wish I would have seen that post, would have saved me a bunch of research. I've thought long and hard of just ditching the vortecs and picking up some L98 heads. I'm hoping I've made the right move. 375 sounds even better!
damn $375 and thats only 1/3 of the intake assembly??? What about a Ram Jet intake? Anyone replaced a TPI with it? did the use the TPI computer?

Cummon? Tooling costs for an aluminum casting? All you need is a whittled out piece of wood...
The money they make on a simple SB chevy duel plane on about 5 purchases pays for the contruction of the mold.
"it's only worth it if you are willing to pay it"
Sorry, but for the price they ask, i'd rather go ahead and fab my own alum box manifold and tig it together. It would perform better, cost about $4-10 in scrap but would take alot of time, but it would still be worth it.
Don't buy a vortec intake more than $250...
They ARE ripping you off, prices will steadily drop and they are looking for guys like us who are cornered to pay the cash to line their pockets.

I wish they would read this post! Maybe they would realize that its too expensive and lower the price some. Maybe I'll boycott and not buy one...yea right, newly rebuilt 355 sitting there on the stand waiting for this stupid 400 dollar intake. I hope I see some performance gains with the heads and intake.
