Some help here guys with......Timing!?!

I have read in many Pontiac HP Tech articles that you can bump the timing to as high as 12 degrees initial and see some strong performance gains. My question is if I do this how will it affect my engine in the long hall. It is driven on a regular basis and I am not to type to be under the hood everytime I want to go for a cruise. Any and all help would be great. Also what do you thin is the best timing to set the engine at??

As long as you are not getting detonation (pinging)under acceleration you will be just fine,I have mine set at 10 now and have no problems.Your computer automaticly retards and advances as needed any way,but only so much.
