Where did you set your zz4 cam. Straight up or 4deg before or after. thanks

 

On all sbc you always set your timing chain at dot to dot which is crank dot up and cam dot down if it is dot up dot up you will be 180 degrees out.

 

Dot to Dot or Dot up dot down.......Makes no difference the cam travels twice for every turn of the crank..... I install them dot to dot for ease. What really matters is where TDC is for the distributor installation.

Travs timing chain sprocket has three keyways, one for straight up, one for four deg. before, and one for four deg. after. These are usually marked like A,B, and C.

Sorry I can't help you with your question Travs, I just wanted to clear up what you were asking vs. the dot to dot deal...

 

Well, a lot of it is going to depend on your other engine components (cam, heads, intake, etc.) Retarding the cam will give you a bit more power on the big end while advancing it will help you down low in the RPM range. So, it depends on whatcha got and whatcha wanna do with it. I wouldnt recommend going more than + or - 4 degrees.
