Cooling Problems

This is the first summer i have had this car. the other 92 z i had was always running hot. this car is fine if im driving, but if i go thru a drive thru or sit at a long light, the temp gage tries to climb almost to the red zone. the car only has 14k miles and before i had it it was in the garage most of the time, so im guessing it has the original t-stat in the car. what i need to know is what do i do to keep the car from getting too hot this summer.

lets take a look at this for a minute you say while you are driving it's fine which means it is not the air dam(typical problem most people have)when you sit is when you have the problem it could be a few things 1.the t-stat could be inop.2.thee electric fan isnt coming on3.the water pumps not doing it's job.4.the temp gauge is reading incorrectly.to check this let the car sit at idle look at the gauge the fan should come on at 219 degrees and go off around 189 if the fan doesnt come on check the relay.replace the t-stat with a 180 see if it helps as a last resort change the water pump if it has been changed before that might be the problem my buddy had one that overheated with both fans on all the time, the dealership put on a pre 88 waterpump which means it was spinning the wrong way not cooling the engine.

well, i believe the fan is coming on. funny thing is, it actually gets cooler if i turn on the a/c. that tells me that the other fan is working right. do all camaros get hot in the summer when they are running while stopped?

I thought that the when the ac kicks in,both fans came on, my car seems to run cooler with ac on for some strange reason also??? I just put a toggle switch under my cig lighter for both fans.Dont waste the money on a fan switch, i payed $40 for one and it didnt seem to work right, the thermostat it gives you must be placed just right, just buy a $2 toggle switch and be done with it.

make sure your fan switch is working, best bet is just to replace it, its oknly like $10. Then make sure you have the correct pump. If oyu have a serpintine system, you ned a reverse rotation pump, if not you need a standard rotation pump. Also one more thing is to check if the cat is cloged or doesnt flow enough. Just some thoughts, my car did the same thing, it was the wrong pump and the guy bad the TPi gaskets on it when I used to have TBI and it blocked off the rear coolent pasages.

I have the exact same problem on my camaro 87 -tpi. I have thinked about putting in a switch for the other fan to. How did you do the wiring for this? Do I need a relay or is it easier than that?

I guess I must just be one of the lucky ones... I have a '91 with the dual fans and the whole system works as advertised. The only differences are that I have a Stewart hi-flo water pump and a hypertech fan switch. T-stat is 195... fan switches on at 200, off at 185. The other fan comes on with A/C or defrost... No problems sitting in traffic, or on the go...
