When removing smog stuff, what can be removed without engine codes showing up?

I have a 86 305 TPI. My question is can the smog pump & all those crappy hoses , EGR valve (my egr has a wire coming out of it?) be removed without triggering a check engine light code? I just bought a new 383 roller engine that Im about to install & just hate all of that crap in the way of my valve covers & headers. Last question is, will my 305 injectors be enough to start the car with the new engine?

i removed it all, pump, hoses, metal lines, all of it, and just unplugged the connectors on the bottom of the box and it didnt throw a single code. i removed it because i put on headers and they didnt have the a.i.r. tubes so i just took it all off. problem free for over 6 months.

what did u use to block off the EGR hole? Did your EGR have the wire comming out of it? I heard that wire measures the heat from the exhaust gas & if it dosn't sense any heat it will set off a engine code.

Disconnect it and find out. Theres a single wire disconnect for that sensor near the distributor.

Ive never had a MAF car set a code for the EGR yet... though I have heard of it happening to people.

Motors going in today. Ill let u know if the code sets. What about the 305 injectors will they allow the engine to crank up & run? I dont have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator yet.

The injectors should fire the car and allow it to run. Running effeciently and properly is another story.

Disconnecting your EGR will cause a code to be set under certain driving conditions...usually when you are cruizing at a steady speed on the freeway. You will get a code 32 - EGR Failure. After you turn the car off for a few minutes, it will go away until the next time.

Also, if you have to go thru emmissions, you will have higher NOX readings without the EGR...so much more, that you may not pass.

Can the EGR be functional without the smog stuff? I'm about to rip the smog stuff off my car and just use the dual cats, but I'll leave the EGR if it will still work and serves a purpose.

Fred, yes you can take all the a.i.r. stuff off and the EGR will work fine without it. They are completely separate.

86tra/maro, you ought to consider bumping the fuel pressure up without an adjustable regulator. I think there's a tech article in the FAQ on how to do it. Something like putting a penny or nickel in the regulator to stiffen up the spring. As for the EGR, I'd leave it in place if I were you. Otherwise you'll throw a code on the highway from time to time, as someone already mentioned. Of course with a stock prom you're bound to throw a code for it anyway. I also have all my a.i.r. stuff removed and have headers without the lines (cut them off) so if you want to see a pic you can check it out at my web site.
