a few 305 build ?s

well i have my parts selection for my sprin time buildup on my camaro but, i want to make sure i have all base covered therefore i figured id ask a couple small questions.

i currently have an 89 305 in my car but, i'm planning to run 416 casting heads that i got off an 86 iroc which was a flat tappet cammed engine as opposed to my 89s roller cammed blocks 081s.

1.)Therefore i wanted to know if my summit brand self aligning 1.6 ratio full roller rockers will still work. Not sure if the 416s ever needed guide plates or what not and how that migh be a problem.

2.)i was thinking while i take them to the machine shop that i'm going to have them cut .010-.015 off the deck so i get a little more desireable compression. Basically curious if thats enough that i might have to worry about different sized pushrods.
3) taking only .01-.015 off the heads would be small enough to not have to worry about the front and rear of the manifold leaking as long as i put a proper 3/8 bead of silicone down right?

and yes the 416s are ported because i can't have the downtime of porting the factory 081s after they come off my engine since it's my dd, so thats y i'm using them.

The 1986 heads will not allow your intake to just bolt on. Did you know that you will have to modify your intake bolt holes?

I don't think the self-aligning rockers will work on 86 and older cylinder heads. I know 87 and up as well as the Vortecs use self-aligning rockers.

Re: a few 305 build ?s

1) Self-aligning rocker arms reduce the need for guide plates. You can still run guide plates if you feel you are going to have a good deal of deflection in your valvetrain.

2) Run a thin head gasket. Cheaper, easier and without the complications of proper intake alignment. Watch your valve to piston clearance if you are running a larger cam.

And yes, you will need to grind out your intake bolt holes to match the early heads. Not a big deal.

Re: a few 305 build ?s

kool i'm buying a stealth ram for it so the intake bolt and valve covers issues are no big deal of course.

as for decking the heads i vary well may just leave them alone, and run a thinner gasket so long as the warpage to deck and block are minimal enough that it will seal (i'm sure it is as it only has about 40k on a rebuild).
