Air filter experiment
I have a cone-type K&N filter directly on my TB. Some folks say: "You're sucking up hot air.Go back to the old set-up but with a open element filter".
I did. I lost power! It was very noticable. Throttle reponse was shot to hell.
Maybe my Cowl hood cools things off a bit. But I noticed a slight power increase when I originally put the filter on my TB. I imagine a cold air kit might work a little, but a filter directly attached to the TB(hot or cold air)has to give you better flow than any air routed through corners and bends of a Cold Air Kit, and especially the stock air silencer.
I'd like to hear some opinions, based on experience.
PS I hope I posted to the right section.

The only question to be asked is, how are you evaluating this? Maybe you 'felt' faster, but it could just be the extra noise/your imagination. Unless teh stock style filter is completely clogged i don't see how throttle response could be seriously affected. And WOT differneces are in the 5hp max range, no way in hell you feel that.

SOTP.... not the best way to measure things.
I wont say I had the best test vehicle... but I took the air inlet off my TA and attached the MAF directly to the rubber bellows at the track about 1.5 years ago, and it ran slower. I dont have the slip here in front of me, so I wont be able to post until later about the actual difference. It definitely had crisper throttle response, and I would say that part-throttle was better, but WOT was not, and the timeslip showed that.

I took my K&N cone and mounted it behind the left headlight while connecting it to the TB with some 4" aluminum heater duct, that way you get the filter moved away from all the engine heat (behind the radiator), and it should get a little cool air that comes around the headlights and all the little gaps. I thought the throttle response really picked up with this set-up, but I dont know if it really helped because that was one of the many mods I tryed when my car went from stock 15.0 to 14.1 I would like to make some kind off good high flowing ram-air set-up, but I think the factory ducts are just too small. I want it to work good on my 383. I measured the Holley 58mm TB - twin 58mm and the round hole at the front of the filter intake(plastic duct to the filters) was only 3 3/16" dia. just a little bigger then one 58mm holes - not good. So I'm still thinking of how to make a good high flowing cold/ram air set-up, maybe off the cowl hood?
Any ideas???

The air filter I used was a K&N filter that came w/the car(like the stock one). I modifyed it so it was closed off at the bottom and attached it to the air silencer thing w/out using the air cleaner box. I just showed it on the hole. It was very notacible. I was surprized.

In my exerience, sometimes the amount of EXTRA air that you get from having an open element is more than compensated for the extra heat generated by the engine.
I Installed the Holley Projection on my old 67 Riv, and the Open element Air intake temp never exceeded 110° on a 80° day. I DO know that colder-more dense Air does help, but if you strangle your car of air then what difference does it make.
Do what you think works best.
