Hard to start

My car is a 88 Trans-Am 305 Auto TPI. Starts fine when cold (1st crank), but when warm, it seems to turn over forever before it catches. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I ran into a recent hard start problem and it was my timing.

Thats an easy free one to check

Off the top of my head
-a bad CTS could be telling your ECM the wrong temp when warm, thus using a very non-ideal start-up enrichment/spark advance
-Your cold start injector switch that activates it is bad and is causing it to come on when it shouldn't (ex. on a warm start.) You should be able to check this easily by disconnecting the CS injector.

Most other long crank problem i can think of offhand would be as bad/worse when cold. Your problem seems to lie in the engine management system. Then again, it could be something dumb like your starter is cranking reasonably slower when heat soaked, and thus makes it that much harder to fire up.

Where is the cold start injector and what's "cts"? I have this very same problem on an 86 305 iroc. Starts easy when cold, cranks forever when warm.

CTS - Coolant Temperature Sensor

And the 9th injector is at the base of the driverside runners in the middle

Well, I pulled the connector off the cold start injector (when the car was warm), and then it was REALLY hard to start. Put the connector back on, and it started on the first crank. When it starts, though, it tends to 'stumble' to a start with a moment of silence and then a high idle @ 1200-1500 RPM. How do I test the CTS? thanks for all the replies.
