i got a 1991 camaro convertible z28 with the 305 tpi ..

i just rebuilt it .. and put on trick flow vortec heads, hooker 2055 headers / y pipe, comp cam, edelbrock vortec tpi hi flow intake manifold, taylor 8mm wires, etc ..

im just about to start it for the first time .. what timing do i need to set the distributor at initially and what is it supposed to be ..


do i need to "break in the cam" its a roller comp cam .. what procedure do yall recommend .. 2000 rpm for 30min.. ??

It needs to be 6 degrees below top dead center for the stock timing, and when you set it you have to have that tan wire disconnected that is right above the heater core box on the passenger side.

 

allright .. thats what i thought it should be .. i just dont have the sticker any more ..

i havent started the motor yet .. but i set the distributer at 6 btdc .. im guessing thatll work untill i get it broken in .. then ill adjust it with my timing light ..

 

that above procedure you mentioned is only true of flat tappet cams. There is no real break in procedure, for a roller cam.

as for the engine itself most say run a rotella oil as it has the best antiwear additives, and i'd change it after about 500 miles then again after your usual 3k if it were me but, thats just my opinion........

anyways you should be fine, i hope you have good tuning skills or are running a maf setup tho, i'd bet it runs terrible if not no offense.

 

hes got MAP its a 91. might not even run. hope you can tune. like the previous guy not trying to put you down but making sure you know what youre getting into.

im about 30 mins from starting it .. or "trying to " .. just havin some problems with the hooker y pipe .. one bolt is refusing to go in ...


the comp cam guy said it should run fine .. but if not then im gonna get tunin sooner than i was going to ..

or i might take it to someone to dyno tune it for me ..

started on the first turn of the key ..

holy crap it sounds amazing ..

it idled fine .. had a really nice small lopey sound to it .. then again i dont have the exhuast hooked up .. just a hooker 2055 y pipe ..

i pressed the gas pedal and it INSTANTLY responded ..

i havent driven it yet .. so i dont know if its gonna perform on the street good .. but ill find out tommorow

yall think itll need a tune soon or could i wait a little till i build up some cash?

comp did say it would work fine with a 305 .. says in the description "best in tpi motor" .. its a comp 08-501-8 .. 212/218 264/269 duration .. and around .480 / .490 lift (dont remember)
