15* timing
15* timing
Please help. Today I went to do the timing on my 88 T/A 305 TPI Auto, and found (after pulling the computer connector) that the timing was set at what seemed to be about 22* BTDC! So I re- adjusted it for 8*, and the car ran like crap, and had absolutely NO POWER. Tried it at 6*, even worse. Also, this is the first time I've done this, is the connector the white wire that comes out of the wire loom? the manual says it has a stripe on it , but I can't find one. The only way I can get any power is to advance it to 15*. WTF? Please help I don't know what is going on ( sorry for the long post) Thanks.
From your description, I'd say you didn't properly bypass the ESC system. Look for a single tan wire with a stripe on it against the passenger side fender somewhat behind the coolant overflow reservoir. It has a black connector on it that is easily removed and then you're set. You are probably backing off the total timing right now which means your base timing is likely somewhere ATDC and causing it to run poorly. Bypass the ESC and set the base advance to 6-8* BTDC and that should fix your problem. Hope this helps.

I think you got a hold of the tach wire. check to see if you tach functions when you disconnect the white one. if so then the wire that you want is way over to the pass. side near the firewall. it should be coming in and out of the loom right near the blower motor housing if you know where that is.
SOLVED!! Thank you guys very much for being so Quick! I guess it was the tach wire I disconnected, DUH. What do I know. Turns out I was about 20* ATDC. Thanks again. Runs great now!
