function of the maf burnoff relay?
function of the maf burnoff relay?
my car is an 86 442 with a 305 tpi.
the problem is the car sets a 33 and 42,
sometimes its runs great, then after i beat on it for a while the ses light comes on, the other times it starts, then when i hit the gas it sounds like its reving, but its hesitating and poping.(weirdest thing ive ever heard)sounds like its going to die but i doesnt. i replaced everything, maf tps, esc, ecm, wiring harness, fuelpump relay, the only thing i can think of is the maf relays. anyone ever have thiers take a crap? what happens when they go?

Usually the relays work or dont work, so maybe the maf isnt working because the power relay is shot, which is possible. The burnoff wont affect driveability unless the maf wire is so covered with garbage that it throws the reading off, but I would say thats not your problem.

The relays will get tired and if your components come from an 86 it's about time to crap out.
Generally speaking a bad MAF or MAF Power Relay will set a code 33 while a MAF Burnoff Relay will set a code 36.
The burnoff system is there to heat a microscopic wire inside the MAF to 1000° briefly to clean any contaminents from the sensing wire.
I would replace both relays (same part number) as well as the fuel pump relay at the same time. They usually are all in the same shape.
Additionally if your PROM is also 1986 there is probably a bug in it and it needs to be updated. It is possible for the stock PROM to set false MAF codes.

i swapped out the relays, and no change. i think its the maf sensor, i borrowed my brothers from his 86' and i got no code 33.
btw- all the componants are from an 86tpi camaro.
