K&N filter question

A friend of mine is in the process of totally rebuilding his IROC droptop. He just got a ASCD hood(looks like an SS hood) and wants to know if you can mount a K&N filter directly to the TPI? We fitted the cone up and it would be pretty close to the opening in the hood, but there's a sensor on the bottom of the existing intake tract that'll probably send it straight to limp mode if not installed.
Anyone done this before?

If he has a 90 with speed density, you can put a specific K&N directly on the throttle body, but it makes no sense as it will be drawing hot air in from under the hood and probably run no better or even worse. Most cars that have that are hot rods because of space. If his is a 87-89 MAF car(which it sounds like),the MAF has to be removed,so it will run like crap and show trouble codes up the a$$.His best bet IMO,is to put on an single(if its MAF)or dual(if its SD)SLP cold air induction,or homemade from the foglight openings,to draw cool air from underneath.

You can only mount the cone K&N to the throtle body if it is a speed density TPI. It will not work with the MAF system because it needs the sensor to determine how much air is entering the engine. Speed Density uses manifold pressure to determine this instead. Also most people do not run a open cone on the end of the throttle body because it is pulling in a lot warmer air from the radiator which may hurt engine performance instead of helping it. A cold air set up is the best way to go.

That's kinda what I thought(speed density vs. mass air). His car is an '89, so this definitely would be a problem. Our other idea was to run the dual inlets to the fog lamps.
Thanks a lot!
