Not sure if this will get you 400 HP, but this is what I would do:

1)Different heads-From what I have read, TPI heads (Iron or aluminum) are very good, but there are better designs on the market (Vortecs for one...but there are others that don't require a different base). Also, I don't know how much compression they were running in '88, but I would gun for around 9.5:1 with Iron heads and 10-10.5:1 with Aluminum heads (run premium of course).

2) Different cam to take advantage of the breathing ability of the heads.

3) Ported or aftermarket runners and plenum (maybe gasket matching as well???). Cam and heads really won't do much with these mods.

4) Different injectors maybe? Not sure on this one...maybe you other guys can help me out here. Can the injectors on an '88 GTA support 400 horse? If not, I would go to something a little bigger (maybe 22lb/hr). I don't have the formula in front of me.

5)Modified PROM

6)Does anybody know if a stock MAF can support 400HP? If it can...great...if not, do something else with. Maybe somebody else has some ideas here. I think TPIS works on them for more power potential.

Well, that's all I can think of. Alot of this stuff is major $$$, but if you want the power, you gotta pay for it. I guess it's easier for me to suggest some of this stuff, but then again, the engine that my TPI is going on is outside of the car right now. Good luck with it.

id do something like get a mini ram from tpis with a larger throttle body and the air foil with matched injectors and a fuel pressure regulator. For heads id probably go with the edelbrock performer centerbolt heads because they are aluminum and will run cooler and are lighter and they have 60cc combustion chambers and will increase your compression ratio. with tpi im pretty sure the highest compression you can go is 10.5:1 any higher will cause your knock sensor to go off because higher compression is louder. Get the heads ported and polished to specs that work well for what you plan to do with your motor. Do screw in studs and guideplates. The comp pro mangum rockers are in my opinion the best rockers out unless your going for something insane like jesel rollers which you wont need. For your ignition id go with an msd 6al ignition box with an msd billet distributor, msd blaster coil with super conductor 8.5 wires. id go with a comp true roller timing chain with a zz9 cam and an ati super damper. Other then that you could do little dumb things like k and n filters with your own ram air setup using duct tubing and wires ties with some duct tape and you could do march under drive pulleys and a low restriction exhaust and hi flow catalytic converter and all mandrel bent tubing. Synthetic oil is better then conventional if the motor is out of the car you might want to consider doing a higher volume oil pump. If you wanted to rebuild the bottom end i could go on forever about that. moroso has a larger oil pan for a 1 piece rear main seal that you could consider using especially if you are going to use a different oil pump. out of experience studs dont seal very well...at least manley studs and accel ignition is junk, better then hei but still junk. an aluminum radiator is worth it if you have the money as is an aluminum water pump. As far as maf modifying goes you could take the screen off and those metal blade things inside you could grind them out but its not worth grinding them out because you could kill the filament making the maf useless, on the other hand you could send in your maf to tpis and they will do it for you. jet performance and tpis have proms and they work well...good luck

one thing you will have to address if you are keeping it n/a is the heads and intake the stock base is only good to 330 hp porting might get it to 350 so there is one restriction the runner length of a tpi isn't designed to make hp.if you are going the n/a route either go with a superram or miniram intake go with afr190's or tfs 23* heads you'll need to open the exhaust considerably 1 3/4 headers hi flo cat and a good catback then start working on your prom all this costs money and compared to a lot of other 4th gen lt1's and ls1's and rustangs pushrod or modular the intake setup for a tpi costs the most(don't ask me why????)2nd ii would reccommend not worrying about hp as much as worrying about how quick the car is(not how fast the car is)tpi's make huge tourqe play on that your stock fuel system will support over 400hp(may be maf limited)focus on gearing the exhaust a good converter andd top it off with a procharger or vortec i know a guy with an 87 iroc stock with the exception of exhaust, serpentine setup and a vortec he dropped his times from 15.2 to a 12.9 with those mods.iif you wanna be king of the streets go with tourqe if you're gonna run the silver state challenge go for hp

Pete, i was looking at your sig.......

Shouldn't you be running a lower time with all those parts?

why aren't you running 1 3/4" headers?

I don't recall the test or the mag it was in anymore but after testing a boat load of headers they determined that for shorty headers 1 5/8 were the best on the street.

Oh...

SLP dosen't make long tube headers?

15/8 I understand for a 305..

but seems you would need more for a 350
especially with heads etc
