alright its maybe 25 degrees out right now and i tried to start my car for the first time after sitting for around 4 months and it didn't start, i hooked up a charger to it and it started right up but but had a hard time turning over....i drove it for a bit and parked it, then decided to see if it would start on its own and i waited to hear the fuel pump and tried to turn it over and it made a hideous CRAZY WHINDING NOISE! and ahhhh WTF? then again i tried and it stared up but once again it had a difficult time turning over....so yes i turn the car back off and tried to start it back up and WOW the 'WHINDING' noise came back, it just sounds like a loud screeching! can someone tell me what is going on???????? a buddy was there and he thinks its a mix of the car sitting and being so cold (its been negative 30 at night for a week) and thinks my starter is making all the noise.... PLEASE PLEASE help me out, ive never had a vehicle that has made a noise like this before, so yes call me stupid if i am! THANKS FOR ALL WHO TRY TO HELP!!!

 

If the noise is happening just when you try to start it, then yes I think the starter is going bad.

 

Most likely your starter. I had the same problem. I bought a new starter but the noise went away before I had a chance to install it.
The noise left when we finally got above 0 degrees for an average.
Make sure your battery is fully charged before condemning your starter though. Park it someplace warm and try starting it the next day. All cars are harder to start when it becomes extremely cold.

 

okay i will take the battery out and fully charge it, thanks for the post.....i was just worried about that crazy screeching noise! yeah it happens every other time i try to start it, but like i said when it dosent make that noise and does start it starts very hard...thanks everyone!!

 

so what are my chances having any flywheel damage?? i guess its may not be as uncommon as i think....taking into consideration that its sound just horrible when i try to start it

 

well if ur starter was not put in right (if not original) than the chances are high but not too bad.. i just fixed mine. there were no shims in it and my fly wheel was missing a few teeth. but not too bad the guy just shaped and welded new ones. better than pulling fly wheel. but cold weather can ruin batteries so make sure not too only charg iot but make sure it is good and once you do that and it dont start try the hammer on starter trick. then replace the starter
