Excess Carbon Build-Up?

I started taking my TPI apart to do some detail work and was amazed at the amout of carbon build-up I found inside the upper plenum and tubes. The motor has 74,000 miles on it and has had the smog pump disabled for quite some time but the EGR is still there and working. Is this kind of build-up normal?

When I ported my plenum i had plenty of carbon as well, I dont think its any kind of problem, but you'll need to get all the metal shavings from the porting out so I just used carb/brake cleaner and it took the carbon with it.

That carbon is probably from your egr/pcv valves.
