I've seen most mounted on the strut tower hump. Mine is on the firewall, driver side. After my ZZ4TPI swap I had room when I ditched the 305 TBI relays.
Some also move the charcoal canister and mount it in that spot.

I too have been looking for a good spot. I was considering making a plate for it that mounts on top of the battery. Another place is where the washer fluid bottle is located. I was going to go boneyard hunting for a smaller one and mount it elsewhere. Another place (for us IROC owners) is under the airbox area between the headlights, like on top of the impact beam.

Any opinions on any of these?

I removed my AC and mounted it on the flat blowe housing, if this is not an option for you I know a lot of people relocated their Canister and put it out front.

My MSD box is mounted on a plate over my battery... and I hate it! It makes it really difficult to get to the battery.

I am currently scoping out moving it to the other side of the car where the charcoal canister used to be.

Doesn't make much sense to put it anywhere where it is going to interfere with your accessibility to another component. Also, I have heard that you don't want to get it too close to headers due to heat.

I relocated the firewall relays on the driver's side to the fender. The wires still reached so no harness splicing. Then I mounted my MSD to the firewall. It was a total PITA because I used the rubber isolator feet and had to cram my hands in through the cowl opening to put nuts on the ends.

If I did it again I'd mount my MSD in the passenger compartment up near the ECM. Matter-of-fact, I'm probably going to relocate mine there fairly soon.

Don't get it too close to the ECM. It might interfere and throw codes.

Just a thought.

If you look below the power brake booster there is a rubber gromet in the firewall plugging a hole that is big enough to pass all the wiring for most ign. boxes.
I just fed the harness through this and sealed it and mounted my box to the bottom of the dash.
unless you really want to SEE your box, I think this is the way to go since it offers the most protection for the electronics.

I mounted mine in the passenger compartment. I put it down on the panel right in front otf the door tot he right of where the passenger's feet go. I probably need to move it. I always have to tell people to watch their feet.

I installed mine on the passenger side strut tower. On the back side of it towards the fender. I used some 3M tape to stick it to the tower. There is just enough room there for it. Its close to the coil and battery so it was easy to hook up.

I mounted mine inside hanging from the bottom of the air conditioning box. Plenty of room.

I remounted my canister over about 3" invard, and mounted my 6a there. I don't think that this will work with the 6al though, sience it is wider. I know a guy with the 6al who ended up mounting it under the hood latch area. I took a pic of my setup and will post it up later on tonight, pending photopoint is back up! If not, anyone know of any good free image hosts?

Here you go! I moved over the box about an inch or two and drilled new holes to mount up the canister. HTH!

Ugghh... photopoint is really starting to suck now that they have changed hands. Not only do they want money to use it, but no more hot linking into a forum. Yuck. Here's the page link!
