Removing the EGR really doesn't buy you anything. If it is not working, then fine, it will save you having to buy another one.
As for performance, the ECM disables the EGR @ WOT, so it does nothing (removal) for WOT performance.
The only reasons why I would not run with an EGR is because it isn't working and I don't have enough more to fix it or the intake/head combo I am installing does not support an EGR.
You do realize that you will have to reduce your "spark advance" on your eprom if you remove an EGR as the EGR allows you to run much higher spark advances at part throttle.

And how often do you and others look in your intake?

Youll need a chip burned to disable the egr function and check engine light, spark tables, etc.
On a stock engine, removing the egr can cause stalling, stmbling or detonation...I dont advise it.
Even though its for emissions, EGR can actually cool the intake charge by 500 degrees F and help reduce pinging on part throttle.
If you remove the egr, you need to block off the egr ports internally or youll get constant egr flow into the intake and it leads to stumble and stalling...kinda like when the egr gets stuck open when its bad.
Its making the chambers too cool to ignite the fuel properly.
When an egr is stuck closed, the engine heats up and detonation can occur.
Some people have told me they have removed their egrs with no ill effects, others have said it ran like crap and had a chip burned for them to stop this problem and the check engine light issues.Guess it all depends on the car.
Ive left mine on even with some mods..I left the TPI alone to run as it was designed for the least amount of headaches and its been trouble free since.
