best for 1/4 mile, HP or torque?
Hey guys, i want to run my GTA in the 1/4 mile, but i know there are alot of parts that give me higher HP, and some that will build my torque, wut is best to have for running the quarter mile?

horsepower is (torque x rpm)/5250
so what you really want is a flat torque curve. if you want to compare torque to hp you can generally say brute torque on the low end will give you a good 1/8th mile time but your 1/4 will suffer. high hp with low low end torque will give you a good 1/4 mile time.
example
i can get my buddy's 2000 z-28 a4 2.73 gears in the 1/8th but he will blow me away in the 1/4 why? i get off the line better than him and he plays catchup the whole first 1/8th mile but when he passes me he flys by me.
just get parts that will give you more top end without sacrificing too much low end.
headers and full exhaust are a great start. then you can work on your intake and if you get adventuras you can siamese your intake like i did and get more top end and solid midrange.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

(by the way, if you STRICTLY want to run the 1/4 with this, I hate to say it but you might want to look into carbs)
Good luck!

duke,
i'm not an expert but to kinda answer your question.
top hp at 5500 and top torque at 4500 is a higher end motor so its gonna be solid in the 1/4 but with slicks and a converter it can pull great 60 ft times. what i'm saying about low end torque is good for a car that is basically stock and running on street tires. a car that does not have much bottom end torque can be made to launch. that is what gears, torque converter, and slicks and drag radials are for.
its all in what you want, a daily driver/weekend warrier you would want to build for good low end torque and a solid midrange torque
if you want a great 1/4 mile and don't care how it drives on the street then go for top end power and gears/converter and stuff that will get you into your powerband.
Andrew
p.s. i would need to know what power you are making at those rpm's to say what it would actually do.

If the car isn't set up for upper RPM performance NoS will REALLY cause you problems.
Decide the range you want
torque for street
hp for quarter
and then chase after that
Or you can meet in the middle, like 1 5/8ths headers, bigger runners, ported base (no siamesing) and then you've got a decent car for both.

wow
you should be running a solid 12 if thats in a 3rd gen. probably around 110-115mph? i'm not great at guessing this stuff but you have 200 more hp than me and 100 hp is about a full second and i'm runnin a 14.4 @ 95
with that much power your 1/8th mile will not suffer at all because you are probably making more power at your low end than most people anyways.
if you were trying to disprove my theory about hp for 1/4 and torque for 1/8th you did a good job. but what i should have said is for a mild engine (250 - 300 hp) what i said will hold true. if you start making more power than that and can stick a good launch it won't matter that you peak out up top you will get good times all around.
the tpi as set up from the factory is a great stoplight to stoplight engine. so good 1/8th mile times but will loose top end to some cars.
i never said i was an expert
and i'm definately far from it

OK hopefully I can get my camaro to the track when I get this engine, I have the chance to buy it so thats why I asked about it hopefully I can get it, and see if that engine really kicks some butt
